Foster Family: The Kozak-Oxnard Family
Defne was terribly injured when she was first brought to the sanctuary by her namesake, Defne Arsoy. Her trauma left her so fearful of both dogs and humans that she wouldn't leave her kennel, even during her free-run hours. She stayed by herself, blending into a box that was just about the same color as her fur, trying to make herself invisible. The dashing and darling Dede periodically hangs out in her kennel, but even his non-threatening charm could not win her over, so the decision was made to make Nazlı her roommate. Nazlı was also once painfully timid, but she does not have Defne's bad memories. She does have a Foster Family and loving volunteers who have helped her come out of her shell. Defne accepted Nazlı and allowed her to sleep beside her in the box. Nazlı made her feel safe by serving as a shield to hide behind if anyone approached the kennel. Day by day, Nazlı built up her confidence and was eventually able to coax her outside. Defne would hover nervously, consumed by doubt, as Nazlı trotted out the door and turned to say, "Come on, Defne. See, it's safe. Come outside and play with me." Now if Nazlı goes, Defne follows and we can see she is having fun. Defne still avoids people and will run away when they try to approach her. She won't accept treats from your hand, but she'll eat them if you put them down and back away to a "safe distance". It will take time to win her trust, but Nazlı has proven that it can be done. Defne has a foster family supporting her from a "safe distance" in North America. With their help, Nazlı's encouragement, and the gentle patience of volunteers, a wonderful transformation is taking place in Defne.
Defne Barınma Merkezi’ne ilk getirildiÄŸinde feci halde yaralanmıştı. Travması onu insanlardan ve köpeklerden korkar hale getirdi ve serbest dolaÅŸma saatlerinde bile kulübesinden çıkmayan bir köpek oldu. Kendi başına, tüyleriyle neredeyse aynı renk olan bir kutunun içinde yaÅŸayarak görünmez olmaya çalıştı. Serbest dolaÅŸan köpeklerimizden olan atılgan ve sevimli Dede, düzenli olarak Defne ile kulübesinde vakit geçiriyordu ancak onun tehditkar olmayan yumuÅŸaklığı Defne’yi dışarı çıkarmaya yetmedi böylece kibar, tatlı Nazlı’nın Defne ile aynı kulübeyi paylaÅŸmasına karar verildi. Nazlı da önceleri çok çekingendi ancak Defne gibi kötü anıları yoktu. Onun kabuÄŸunu kırmasına yardımcı olan bir koruyucu ailesi oldu. Defne onu kabul etti, Nazlı’nın kutusunun yanında uyumasına izin verdi. Nazlı, biri kafese yaklaÅŸtığında Defne’nin önüne geçip saklanmasına yardım ederek onu güvende hissettirdi. Günden güne Defne’nin güvenini kazanan Nazlı sonunda onu dışarı çıkıp oynamak için ikna etti. Åžimdi Nazlı dışarı çıktığında Defne de çıkıyor ve bunun hoÅŸuna gittiÄŸini görebiliyoruz. Defne hala insanlardan uzak duruyor ve birileri ona yaklaÅŸmaya çalıştığında kaçıyor. Güvenini kazanmak zaman alacaktır ama Nazlı bunun yapılabileceÄŸini kanıtladı. Aktif bir koruyucu aile ya da sakin, nazik ve sabırlı gönüllüler Defne’nin hayatında büyük bir deÄŸiÅŸim yaratabilir.
