The residents of BU paws are a combination of free, kenneled and penned dogs.   When you visit the sanctuary at various times of day, you will meet different dogs, depending on the schedule.

  • Free Dogs:  Get along with everyone, human and canine, and do not attempt to leave the sanctuary.

  • Kenneled Dogs:  Good with people.  Get along with some dogs, but not others, so they require supervision.  They are released daily for timed free-run hours in groups that are compatible.

  • Penned Dogs:  Feral, uncomfortable with people, or have been sent to us from campus because of behavior problems.

Before You Visit:

We have a very small staff with a lot of work to do to care for sixty-six dogs, so please  contact BU Paws to schedule a visit so that staff will be ready to receive you.  First time visitors must be given a tour of the facilities to meet the dogs and understand our programs.  For Volunteers and Foster Families, private meetings with your chosen dogs can be arranged even if it is not during their free-run hours.

During Your Visit, For Your Safety and That of The Dogs:

  • Do not release any animals from their kennels.  If it is not their free-run shift, you could thrust them into contact with canines that do not like them.  Several dogs with health issues require special supervision.

  • Do not stick your hands through the gates to pet the dogs without supervision and permission from staff.  Some of the animals are not comfortable with humans.

  • Do not bring food.  The dogs are well fed and do not require additional nourishment, but it is impossible to distribute snacks evenly to all, which can cause conflict even among those that normally live in harmony.

  • Young children will be accompanied by staff durıng their visits and leash walks to help them establish a happy and trusting relationship with the dogs.
